Guidelines for submitting plant samples to UConn Extension for identification. This service is part of our plant disease monitoring efforts in Connecticut. If downy mildew or Phytophthora appears on woody ornamentals, perennials, bedding plants, herbs, or transplants you can collect leaves and plants as described below and send by priority mail to UConn Extension at the address provided. Sampling

Leaves Collect 8-10 leaves with symptoms ranging from light to moderate. Place in a plastic bag without adding water. Leaves should not be wet. Avoid leaves with overly dried, heavily blighted, or completely dead leaves.
Whole plant If sending a complete plant, uproot the plant and shake off as much potting media/soil as possible. Wrap the roots in damp (not wet) paper towel and bag just the roots, then place the entire plant in a second bag. We recommend 4-5 whole plants and/or 10 seedlings representative of the problem. Most samples can be stored for a short time in a refrigerator before shipping.

Shipping

Place in box with padding, or padded envelope with some cardboard protection, and mail to the address listed below. Do not send samples on Friday as the offices are closed over the weekend. Include your contact info (name, business, email) and crop information. Samples can be dropped off at the address below Mon - Wed 8:30 to 3:00 or as arranged with staff.
